Tropical intertidal seagrass beds as fish habitat: Similarities between fish assemblages of intertidal and subtidal seagrass beds in the Philippines

چکیده
Tropical intertidal seagrass beds have recently been identified as foraging grounds for multiple fish species, although the possible drivers of migration to such remain unknown. Investigations fishes occurring in and subtidal beds, comparison food resources dominant trophic groups surrounding bare-sand areas, were conducted at two sites northern Mindanao, Philippines. Fish species collected overlapped by 65%, with richness abundance both residents visitors between habitats not differing substantially (although significantly higher than areas), many site-attached appeared during low tide. Benthic-invertebrate feeders, including juveniles commercially important dominated comprising >70% abundance. Four them (Halichoeres argus, H. papilionaceous, Lethrinus harak, Parupeneus barberinus) fed primarily on small crustaceans, harpacticoid copepods amphipods, densities being areas. The results demonstrated that function visiting fishes, addition providing a permanent habitat resident species. Recognition importance tropical has significant implications management protection coastal biodiversity fishery resources.

Habitat use of shrimps in the intertidal and shallow subtidal seagrass beds of the tropical Banc d’Arguin, Mauritania
The Banc d’Arguin in Mauritania is an area characterised by shallow waters and tidal flats with extensive seagrass beds. The aim of this study was to determine the role of the Banc d’Arguin tidal flats as a habitat and a nursery for shrimps. Shrimps were sampled in the Baie d’Aouatif in the intertidal (ponds, Zostera noltii seagrass beds and bare sediment) with a push net during high and low ti...
متن کاملInfluence of habitat configuration on connectivity between fish assemblages of Caribbean seagrass beds, mangroves and coral reefs
The importance of seagrass beds and mangroves as juvenile habitats for coral reef fishes is still debatable. We hypothesised that the configuration of these habitats in the marine landscape in relation to the coral reef would influence accessibility from the reef (both for fishes that use these habitats for shelter or feeding, and their predators). In combination with differences in habitat com...
متن کاملTemporal changes in the abundance and growth of intertidal Thalassia hemprichii seagrass beds in southern Taiwan
A bimonthly study of temporal changes in abundance and growth of the tropical seagrass Thalassia hemprichii on intertidal reef flats was conducted in southern Taiwan from October 1995 to December 1996. Thalassia hemprichii showed a marked temporal pattern in percentage cover, shoot density, and specific growth rate. There were no significant differences in the variables of T. hemprichii between...
متن کاملHabitat Use by Fishes in Coral Reefs, Seagrass Beds and Mangrove Habitats in the Philippines
Understanding the interconnectivity of organisms among different habitats is a key requirement for generating effective management plans in coastal ecosystems, particularly when determining component habitat structures in marine protected areas. To elucidate the patterns of habitat use by fishes among coral, seagrass, and mangrove habitats, and between natural and transplanted mangroves, visual...
متن کاملLong-term displacement of intertidal seagrass and mussel beds by expanding large sandy bedforms in the northern Wadden Sea
a r t i c l e i n f o On aerial photographs, sandy tidal flats display (1) large sandy bedforms (N10 m long, N 3 m wide), indicating effects of strong hydrodynamics on sediment relief, and (2) beds of seagrass and mussels, indicating stable sediment conditions. These physical and biogenic structures have been mapped from aerial photographs taken in a back-barrier tidal basin of the North Sea co...
